On the afternoon of September 14th, the opening ceremony of Tongji foreign students was held. The University President Pei Gang, Vice-President Dong Qi and nearly 500 foreign students from more than 80 countries around the world attended the ceremony.
In the welcome speech, Pei Gang first greeted the foreign students in Chinese and then described in fluent English a nice prospect after they learn Chinese language in Tongji University considering their limited knowledge of Chinese language. He encouraged the foreign students to carry forward Tongji spirit and work hard on language learning. He wished them to enjoy Chinese culture and their life of study in China.
Later, Prof. Cai Jianguo, Dean of Tongji International Cultural Exchange College, introduced the general situation of Tongji Preparatory Department and International Cultural Exchange College. He also raised hopes and demands for foreign students.
At last, some of the foreign students voluntarily expressed their sincere thanks for the University in simple Chinese and English. They promised to give speech in fluent Chinese in their graduation commencement next year.
