IABSE Held 2009 Recent Major Bridges Seminar in Tongji

International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) held 2009Recent Major BridgesSeminar in Tongji University from May 11thto 12th.

The seminar was made up of 8 plenary lectures and 11 invited lectures. IABSE Chairman, former Chairman, IABSE Vice-Chairman, member of China Engineering Academy, Prof. Xiang Haifan and Prof. Fan Lichu from Tongji University, Deng Wenzhong, member of the US National Academy of Engineering and other 20 famous engineers, scholars and leaders home and abroad in the field of bridge and structural engineering shared their constructing experiences and latest technical progress with more than 200 representatives at the seminar. The representatives went to Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Congqing and Wuhan for investigation. They visited and inspected Sutong Bridge, Hangzhou Bay Bridge, Hangzhou East Bridge, the three bridges over Yangtze River in Nanjing, ChaoTianMenBridgein Chongqing andWuhan TianxingzhouBridge.

On the afternoon of May 11th, the unveiling ceremony of IABSE Award of Excellent Structure for Lupu Bridge was held at Shanghai Lupu Bridge Square. Shen Jun, Deputy Mayor of Shanghai andIABSE Chairman attended the ceremony. Lupu Bridge with a 550 meters length of span was the longest-span arch bridge in 2003 worldwide. This awardof excellent structurewas the first one for the Chinese bridges to win from IABSE.
