On April 30th, the University Vice-President Chen Xiaolong met Mr. Geller, Chairman of German Ecological Engineering Association and his delegation at Xuri Building. The two sides exchanged ideas about research and cooperation on environmental protection and energy conservation.

During the meeting, Chen introduced our construction of Resource-Efficient Campus and the National Universities Resource-Efficient Campus Demonstration and Construction Conference held in Tongji at beginning of April, especially the energy saving technologies and measures that would be applied in No.1 Bus Company renovation project. He said Tongji University had attached great importance to the research and exploration on environmental protection and energy conservation and put the achievements into practice. The parking lot of No.1 Bus Company was a typical storehouse building. During making alteration of this building, we had to maintain the original state of the old building and avoid pulling down the huge building, which would produce large amounts of rubble. Besides, some energy-saving and ecological designs were applied in the design. They were light wells and light guide plates to utilize the sunlight, large solar panels for illumination in garages and corridors, rain-collecting devices for car washing, toilet flushing, and irrigation, roof gardens, ramp greenbelts, recycling of reclaimed water, etc.

Mr. Geller spoke highly of Tongji’s effort on environmental protection and energy conservation, especially the demonstration effect of these energy-saving projects and universal education for students. He expressed his willing to develop communication and cooperation with Tongji on ecological engineering artificial wetlands, sewage treatment so as to make contribution for ecological city construction and environmental protection. He proposed the two sides to increase cooperation and communication on project studies, holding academic conferences and professors exchange visits.

Before the meeting, accompanied by Chen Xiaolong, Mr Geller visited Xuri Building learning the energy saving technologies and measures used in it. Relevant experts from Tongji Institute of Architectural Design Corporation, Building Energy Saving and New Energy Research Center, Infrastructure Construction Department and Energy Center were present at the meeting.
