Recently, 2008 Chinese Car Design Assembly hosted bySocietyof Automotive Engineers of China (SAE China) was held in Nanjing. Zhang Xue from Tongji won champion in 2008 Sabic Innovative Plastic Car Design Contest (China). This regional contest was organized on the basis of the design guidelines of Car Design News 2008 Contest requiring the student designers to design a kind of virtual 3D environmentally friendly Car ForCityDwellers for themillenniumgeneration. The design brief described themillenniumgenerationas one generation leading internationalized life, valuing environmental protection and connecting the virtual world.

Cicada designed by Zhang Xue was a tanden crew cab model. Adjusting the bracket of the top-roof can change the height of the car in order to have capacious inner space for more goods. In addition, when the car was running on the crowded road, the space between the assemblies would be reduced to hold down the space of the whole car. Adopting holographic technique, the car body can present multi-media images. The design concept used steering-by-wire technology that brings electronic system into the car. This technology strength the tasks of steering, braking and variable speed that used to be performed by mechanical and hydraulic systems.
