Ms. Fiona Hyslop Scottish Minlster and Life Minlster of Education Visited Tongji

On April 10th, Vice-president Li Guoqiang met the visiting Scottish cabinet delegation of 9 led by Ms. Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish Minister and Life Minister of Education. Mr. Gavin Anderson, Cultural and Education Department Consul of Consulate-general of Great Britain in Shanghai accompanied the delegation.

During the meeting, Li Guoqiang introduced the historical background, discipline setting and international cooperative projects, etc, especially the cooperative situations with Scottish universities. He also expressed his wishes to reinforce the cooperation with Scottish universities. Ms. Hyslop was satisfied with cooperative achievements we have got together with Scottish universities. She also expressed that Scottish universities had cooperation intention towards Chinese universities, such as the scientific research in the field of biological science. She hoped that teachers and students of Tongji would have comprehensive understanding of Scottish culture and high education.

The Scottish cabinet delegation was consisted of Mr. Mark Batho, the life education department chief of Scottish Ministry of Education, Ms. Janet Brown, CEO of Scottish Qualifications Authority, Mr. John McClelland, President of Scottish Higher Education Funding Council and Ms. Lucy Watkins, Secretary of British Embassy in China, etc. Principals of Tongji Golf Business College and Foreign Affairs Office attended the reception. Prof. Scott Anderson, Vice-president of our partner, Elmwood College and Mr. Carol Borthwick, principal of foreign affairs in Elmwood College were also present at the meeting.

On April 7th, Ms. Fiona Hyslop Scottish Minister and Life Minister of Education signed the memorandum of understanding with Wu Qidi, Vice-minister of Chinese Ministry of Education in Beijing, establishing the formal strategic cooperation relationship between the two parties in several fields. Scotland will set doctoral scholarships for Chinese overseas students.
