After evaluation by pressmen and online selection, Tongji top ten news were unveiled on January 13th. They are:

1. On January 10th, the general plan of the second phase of the construction program for the 985 Project pot through the argumentation. Tongji would construct nine platforms afterwards. As the main support for the platform of deep-sea geology, the former “Key Laboratory of Marine Geology for Ministry of Education” was promoted to “National Key Laboratory of Marine Geology” after appraisal by Ministry of Technology.

2. On February 23rd, Tongji honorary president Li Guohao passed away.

3. The quality guarantee system for undergraduate education was carried out in Tongji throughout April. The establishment of best courses made great break through with 17 courses enrolled into Shanghai Best Courses, top in quantity, and five into National Best Courses.

4. At the beginning of July, Tongji carried out the four-month-long activity of maintaining the advancement of party members. Altogether 500 party branches and 10,800 party members attended this activity. Broad discussion on “Facing the Challenge and Seeking Development” was held among teachers, faculties and students.

5. On July 12th, the mobilization meeting for Tongji’s 100th anniversary was held, which signified the launching of all preparation work.

6. Tongji’s intellectual support to western areas opened a new page. The cooperation with Dingxi District in Gansu lasted for ten years; cooperation with Yibin in Sichuan stepped into a new phase; support to Jin Gangshan College started up and a full-round cooperation with Tibet College went into contract. At the beginning of 2005, several newspapers reported Tongji’s volunteers to western areas, such as People’s Daily, Guangming Daily, China Education, CCTV.

7. The college ID card was put into use at the beginning of October, integrating eleven functions into one card. Altogether 60,000 cards were circulated.

8. China-Deutsch Friendship Hospital program was signed on the contract in Germany on November 10th. China President Hu Jintao and German President Kohler attended the ceremony. Tongji president Wan Gang presented at the China-German Talk.

9. Prof. Shen Zuyan was chosen as academician of China Academy of Engineering on December 13th. On July 25th, Prof. Jiang Lishang won the 9th Hua Luogeng Math Prize.

10. On December 27th, Tongji’s Fuel Cell Automobile Program was selected into ‘China Top Ten University Technology Improvements 2005’.
