Recently, Tongji University received a letter from the Ministry of Education Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation, in which they thanked the university for making full use of its advanced academic capabilities in helping Yunlong County, Yunnan Province lift the poor out of poverty and boost local economic and social development.
The letter acknowledges that for several years, Tongji University has thoroughly studied General Secretary Xi Jinping's important directives on poverty alleviation and resolutely implemented the instructions and arrangements made by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council to defeat poverty. Tongji has responsibly performed its role as an administrated university in fixed-point poverty alleviation and created a unique and effective solution for reducing hardship by making full use of its academic expertise and technical know-how. This not only helped but encouraged local people in poverty-stricken areas to improve their social and economic conditions. Many administrators, teachers and students from Tongji University have been mobilized to participate in the work, turning theory into practice. A number of important results have been achieved through the poverty alleviation work of people from the university who have had the opportunity to strengthen their moral values by working in areas of need.
Since 2012, Tongji University has made great efforts to promote fixed-point assistance to Yunlong County, Yunnan Province. Tongji has invested a total of CYN 11,189,000 and introduced CYN 12,061,000 for poverty alleviation, carrying out training for 7,425 grass-roots cadres and 4,190 specialized technical personnel. Tongji has also purchased CYN 11,656,000 of agricultural products and helped sell CYN 19,225,000 of agricultural products from poverty-stricken areas, as well as helping formulate 14 planning projects in Yunlong County. Tongji has provided invaluable support to Yunlong County over the years and has been instrumental in achieving its goal of poverty alleviation. According to the letter, the Ministry of Education Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Tongji University at the end of the poverty alleviation campaign for its long-term strong support and great contribution to fixed-point poverty alleviation.
The letter from the Ministry concluded that the success of the poverty alleviation campaign was not an end, but a new beginning to greater challenges. It was hoped that Tongji University will continue to strengthen the organization and leadership of the school's fixed-point assistance work, improve the working procedures, and resolutely comply with central requirements. The Ministry wished that Tongji University would continue their excellent work on fixed-point assistance as an administrated university, help fixed-point assistance counties to consolidate their achievements and comprehensively promote the rural revitalization strategy.
