On the morning of March 29th, the launching ceremony of the book Memory of Tongji -This Week in History was held at the Alumni Home of Siping Campus, which marked the beginning of the University History and Culture at the Community Activities. WU Guangming, vice secretary of the University Party Committee, attended the launching ceremony and delivered a speech. People from the Communication Department of the University Party Committee, Care for the Young Generation Committee, Tongji University Press, Student Work Department of the Party Committee, the University Youth League Committee, Logistics Management and Support Department, Logistics Company, Alumni Association, the University Archives (the University History Museum), student counselors, student societies, student communities, and alumni representatives attended the ceremony.

The historical development and cultural inheritance of universities are not only the spiritual nutrients for the innovation and development of universities, but also the internal driving force for building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics in the new era. Since the 11th Party Congress of Tongji University, the university archives (the University History Museum) have been busy promoting Tongji history and culture, telling Tongji stories to the public, and carrying forward Tongji spirit to keep pace with the times. They made good use of historical materials of the university, informing students of the university history, organizing special exhibitions of the university history. The book Memory of Tongji-This Week in History is a milestone of the inheritance and promotion of the university history and culture.

From June 2019 to May 2020, the University Archives posted a series of 52 articles on the theme of "This Week in History" and "Review of University History" on the university’s WeChat official account, which were forwarded to more audience by the University Alumni Association. The publication of the book Memory of Tongji -This Week in History was based on the series of posts that were later edited and compiled by Tongji University Press. The book shows teachers, students, and alumni the development course and the hard-working spirit of Tongji in the past century. The book keeps the features of the WeChat posts, and focuses on university history by following events in history without limiting the content to a certain era or period in the development of the university. Through comprehensive comparison and contrast, it relives the evolution process of the university along its educational philosophy, discipline development, university administration, social services, international exchanges, campus culture, and institutional changes. It reveals the editor's design and thinking in small stories and big events. The book is not only important for inheriting Tongji culture and Tongji spirit, but also significant for the university to promote the study of the party history through story telling of Tongji University history. It will be helpful to encourage teachers and students to work together and jointly promote the development of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

WU Guangming said that the inheritance and promotion of the university culture recorded the persistent pursuit of the university, enriched the university's development course in serving society, and interpreted Tongji people's rigorous, realistic, and self-improving spirit. The book demonstrated the will and belief of Tongji teachers and students to always listen to and follow the Party. It is not only an important carrier of Tongji culture in the new era, but also the spiritual driving force for the university's innovation and development. He encouraged more units of the university to cooperate closely in excavating more historical and cultural resources of the university, colleges, and disciplines to publish more and better books on the university’s history and culture on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the founding of Tongji. These books and their spiritual culture will reach our alumni by entering libraries, student communities, and campus culture, so as to give full play to the educational role of the university history and the university's extensive social influence. It is hoped that the research and publicity of the university history can better serve the fundamental task of cultivating people by virtue and the overall goal of education, and export the historic culture with rich content, novel form, and wide dissemination through special lectures, university history courses and new media platforms, so as to enhance the cultural self-confidence of teachers, students, and alumni and add great spiritual power to the development of a "double first-class" university.
