SUN Jun, an expert in tunnel and underground construction engineering, is a professor at Tongji University. A native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, he was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, and graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1949. To acknowledge his contributions to tunnel and underground building engineering, he was elected academician of CAS in 1991.

SUN is noted for his creation of underground structure engineering mechanics, a new disciplinary branch in 1960. His academic researches include the theory of elastic, viscous, and plastic characteristics of underground structure, rheology of rock soil materials, and the explosion-resistance dynamics of underground protective structures. In the past ten years, he applied engineering and soft science theories and methods (focusing on Intelligent Science) to the urban environment.

Since the 1980s, Prof. SUN has accomplished over 40 projects of National Key Scientific and Technological Research, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and various key engineering research projects, with findings having achieved enormous technical and economic benefits. As early as 1960, he founded the major of tunnel and underground construction engineering in Tongji University, the first major of its kind in China.
