XIANG Haifan

XIANG Haifan, a distinguished Chinese bridge structuralist, has made outstanding achievements and multiple contributions to Bridge Engineering and Wind Engineering. At present, he is a senior member and honorary member of the International Association of the bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) (since he was vice-chairman of IABSE in 2001-2009), honorary president of the Bridge and Structural Engineering Branch of the Chinese Civil Engineering Society, and chief advisor of the Chinese Wind Engineering Society. In 1955, he graduated from Tongji University with a bachelor's degree in bridge and tunnel engineering, and in 1958, he graduated from Tongji University with a master's degree in bridge engineering. Since 2007 he is an Emeritus Professor at Tongji University and was the first Chairman of the Department of Bridge Engineering, the founding Dean of the College of Civil Engineering, and the Director of the State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering. He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

XIANGwas awarded the title of the National Outstanding Expert by the State Council of China in 1986. He has received more than 20 national awards and several international awards including Honorary Membership of IABSE, the Anton Tedesko Medal of the IABSE Foundation for the Advancement of Structural Engineering. He has won First Prize and Second Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, a Second Prize and a Fourth Prize of National Natural Science Award, Anton Tedesco Medal and IABSE Merit of International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering, ASCE Robert H. Scanlan Medal of American Society of Civil Engineers, and IAWE Davenport Medal for Senior of International Wind Engineering Association. These four international awards testify to the international fame and recognition that he earned for China's bridge and structural engineering industry and wind engineering industry.
